PodCasting

What is Podcasting?
Podcasting is a new audio medium that gives listeners the choilce of what they listen to, when they listen to it, and where/how they listen to it.
A podcast is similar to a radio show, with the following differences:
  1. Podcasts are recorded and stored on the internet, usually in MP3 format.
  2. Listeners can subscribe to your "show" so when you record a new podcast, it'll automatically get downloaded to all of your subscribers. How cool is that?
  3. Once the listener has the podcast, they can listen to it on their computer, they can load it onto their iPod or other portable MP3 player, they can burn it to a CD and listen to it in their car. The options are endless.
  4. Podcasts are easy, fast, and inexpensive. You don't need lots of fancy equipment and there isn't any governmental red tape to wade through.
Why Podcast?
Podcasting isn't for every business. Ask yourself, "Does my business have something interesting to say?" If you answer "YES", podcasting is for you and here are just a few reasons why you should be podcasting now:
  1. Provide value to your customers for free.
  2. Build trust, establish expertise.
  3. Generate interest.
  4. Not everyone likes to read. Give people the option of listening to your message.
  5. Create a buzz about your business by word of mouth.
  6. Reach people away from the computer. (podcasts are portable and can be listened to anywhere)
  7. Get listed in directories just for podcasts.
  8. Your message is downloaded automatically by all subscribers.
  9. It's trendy / new.
  10. Create it once, archive it, and you can benefit from it for years.
  11. The podcast can be used in many ways (see Beyond Podcasting below)
What to podcast about?
Podcast about a topic that is interesting to your customers/clients. It does you no good if nobody is interested and therefore nobody listens. Also, you'll want to pick a topic that ties in with your business and will either directly or indirectly lead to more sales. Here are a few sample topics for different industries.
Chiropractor / Wellness

Landscaping / Nursury

Musicians / Bands

Sporting Goods Store

How to start?

It's easy to get started. Just follow the following four steps:

  1. Pick a topic and write an outline of what you'll talk about. Or, you could just get in front of the microphone and ramble, but it's probably best to have some idea of what you'll say.
  2. Create the podcast. This involves making the recording and making edits to the recording. Many people like to record their podcast in small sections then piece the sections together in the editing stage. Check out the Resources link for tips/trick for making your podcast.
  3. Put the podcast on the internet. If you are using our ib3tools system, putting your podcast on the internet is a piece of cake.
  4. Promote the podcast. Don't forget about the obvious things like mentioning your podcast on your website and/or putting up a sign in your store. Also, there are hundreds of podcast directories you can get listed in.

Beyond Podcasting

You've got your podcast up and running. Congratulations!

Now you'll want to get as much benefit out of the podcast as you can. Here are a few ways to do that:

  1. Put links to the audio on website. Not everyone will subscribe to your podcast, so put links to each podcast on your website. Let customers and prospects listen to your podcasts as they visit your website.
  2. Send links to your audio through email. If you are using the ib3tools system, you can easily create and send Audio Postcards to your customers and prospects.
  3. Put your podcast on the telephone. Some people are more comfortable with telephones. Or, sometimes a telephone is just more convenient. Upload your podcasts to your voicemail system and let people listen to your podcasts over the phone. Don't have a voicemail system? They are very affordable (under $15 a month).
